2021 Denville Adopt a Family Program

Dear Supporters:

The Holidays will soon be upon us and it gives me great pleasure to launch Denville Social Services’ annual Adopt a Family program for 2021. With many people still economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for this program continues to be great. If you would like to participate, please click the link highlighted b

What is the Adopt a Family Program?

Denville’s “Adopt a Family” is a longstanding and popular annual program that assists Denville families and seniors experiencing financial hardship during the holidays. It is an anonymous program that matches families and/or seniors in need with individuals/companies/groups that would like to offer assistance by fulfilling “wish lists.”

Families and seniors submit wish lists to Social Services, which are then coded and distributed to our “adopters” via email. (Or regular mail if you wish.) Then the adopters shop for items based on these wish lists. The suggested monetary limit is $50 for each family member and senior. These however, are only guidelines and donors are welcome to purchase items above this monetary limit or beyond what is on the wish list. Gift cards for grocery stores and establishments like Wal-Mart, Target and similar stores are always a welcomed add on.

Social Services will begin sending out wish lists to “adopters” beginning on November 9th. Unfortunately we don’t get wish lists returned as promptly as we’d like so please bear with us if you do not get your “family” or senior in a timely manner. We will do our best to accommodate an adopter’s preference as to the type of family or senior they’d like to adopt, but this is not always feasible and we will contact you should this occur.

Guidelines for 2021

    1. If an adopter is unable to go shopping because of pandemic concerns –or if supply chain issues have made getting requested items difficult - it is entirely acceptable to give gift cards. In that case, we ask you consider what items your adopted family/senior have asked for and select the appropriate gift cards to help them purchase those things on their own. Those can be department store gift cards, cards for online vendors such as Amazon or AMEX / VISA gift cards.

  1. We request that adopters kindly deliver their gifts to Denville Social Services on certain days and at certain times. This is to cut down on the amount of people transiting through Township Hall. Adopters are asked to bring their gifts on these days and times only – after Township Hall has closed for daily business. Those dates are:

Wednesday December 1st 5PM -8PM

Wednesday December 8th 5PM – 8PM

Wednesday December 15th 5PM – 8PM

Saturday, December 18th   9AM – 1PM

Wednesday December 22nd 5PM – 8PM

While you are free to wrap gifts, we ask that all gifts (or gift cards) be placed in a black bag and clearly marked with the code number assigned to the senior/family. (It’s also a good idea to gift tag each individual gift or gift card with the family code number.) This allows gifts go to the correct people and ensures privacy.

Since it’s impossible to predict what will happen over the next couple of months, flexibility will be key. If events force changes to how the Adopt a Family program will be conducted, we will announce those changes on the main Adopt a Family URL at or the Friends of Denville Social Services Facebook page at

If you have any questions please feel free to call the Social Services Coordinator, Stephen Dublanica, at (973) 625-8300 ext. 269 or via email at

Again the link to sign up is here. Many thanks to the generous citizens of Denville!
